A little more news......

Hi everyone.. Sorry for not updating before but several appointments have kept us away from the computer. We have continued to give Jasper the tablets and he has continued to eat. The tablets do make him drowsy but in between sleeping he gets up and goes to his dish for a nibble. We went to the vets this morning early as the vet was fitting us in before he started operating. We were able to say that Jasper had been eating with the medication and that he seemed much brighter on himself and much more back to wanting cuddles and lap time. When he was examined Jasper he seemed to be holding his own and when he was popped on the scales had even put a small amount back on which meant he was not using his body fat and this is good for his kidneys. We were given prescription food to try and mix with the normal food to try and wean in as it will be better.
Mum asked what the prognosis was and the vet said some cats last weeks, some months and he had known one cat last a year, it all depended how Jasper's kidneys fared. We at least know the truth and we just hope that we get the higher scale. he main thing is that at the moment the quality time is good, Jasper is home with us where he belongs and getting and giving love.. Very much so. On Friday we go back and blood Will be taken to see how the levels are doing and until then we carry on and enjoy while we can..

Dad holding GJ close..We have been so emotional...

I will tomorrow try and visit with friends as I have neglected that terribly and am sorry for that. I got all our Christmas cards posted out to friends and will try and get GJ's secret Santa sorted out too..

Thank you all so much for all the good wishes.. They are keeping us going.. Much love GJ and mum and dad xxxxxxx

Carol and Barrie! Thank you for the updates. My heart goes out to you both. Truly. I am so so so sad and so upset for you both that your most beautiful boy is going through this at only 11 years old. I cannot begin to understand how unfair this all is and I am so upset to know that this most beautiful cat whom I've followed and adored is so ill. But today is a good day for sweet GJ. He is eating and above all he is home with you. Please don't worry about the blogging. You must both be so emotionally and physically exhausted. Oh I am getting very teary eyed! I am just so glad gorgeous GJ is with the nicest mum and dad ever! Please give him a little extra cuddle from me and Charlie. There just aren't enough tears..!

Do you have the option of sub q fluids?...I gave my Nikki sub q fluids daily for almost 2 years and my parents did the same for their Siamese, Asia for 5 years (their vet told them Asia had about a week to live without the fluids)...It is relatively easy to do, takes a few minutes a day...I am praying for your precious boy-he is a cherished and wonderful sweetheart...hugs and love...J

Please do not waste an ounce of time worrying about visiting us. We are thrilled to see an update here - GJ is what is important now. We are happy to hear he continues to eat. As for days, months, years, not as important as enjoying every minute in the right now.

We wondered too about giving him sub q fluids. Our daughter did that for her cat for a couple of years too.

Thanks so much for the update - it's good to know that GJ has perked up and is doing better. But like everyone else here has said, it is more important for you humans to give him all your quality time. Don't worry about us bloggers, we are all here purring for you and giving you our support. You don't need to worry yourselves further by trying to come by and visit our blogs right now with everything else that is going on. We just want to see GJ get as much love and care as he can.

We know you are enjoying every minute of having Jasper back home and watching him eat. We too hope you have the high end of the scale! Hugs, purrs & woofs.

Kari said...

Thank you so much for the update! We appreciate it so much ! Whatever time Jasper is granted is a blessing beyond belief for all of us who love him so. We continue our prayers for his comfort and well being. We also ask if it is possible for him to get Subcutaneous fluids at home. We have had seven cats over the years who have benefited from this therapy. Its not painful or cruel in any way. Some of my cats were resistive in the same way as when their hair was brushed. But others, like my bridge-kitty Arthur, would not even bother to move! I'd insert the needle, start the fluids and he'd just sit next to me! If Jasper has any kidney function left at all it is worth a try. Please give him our love, our special love and let him know we are by his side in spirit. Whatever the outcome, Jasper couldn't want a better home or better, more loving parents than you.

So glad to hear this bit of good news. Hope you can try giving him Sub C fluids at home - it will help his kidneys and perhaps extend his time with you! We are purring big time.

Catio Tales said...

Hurrah GJ - you are eating a little! Please keep on eating a lot more - and also going to your Mum and Dad for snuggles (you'll need this to keep warm!). We echo what others have written about subcutaneous fluids and it was not something Äiti knew about in the UK at all, but is much more common elsewhere. And it really does help rehydrate kitties with poor kidney function (and is easy to do).
And PLEASE do not for one minute worry about visiting us because every moment more you spend with GJ is precious. We love you visiting but please do not feel you have to pop over and see us or comment - you have so much to do and think about right now. Very loud purrs from FInland - come on gJ buddy boy, get your nose in that food bowl xxxxx

Poppy Q said...

Carol, when our old girl puss had renal failure, I was able to give her subcut fluids at home every week, which reduced our visits to the vets and reduced her stress.

My vet told me that I would know when she had had enough, and she was right. It was hard to let go,and Puss hung on until I knew that no cuddles or snuggles could make anything better.

We hope you get more cuddles from your lovely boy.

We are so happy and relieved to hear that GJ has continued to eat on his own and that the pills and purrs are working. Our continued purrs and prayers for GJ, for him to have an appetite and feel better and for you and Barrie to have wonderful quality time with your sweet little man. Love to you all.

Ellen Whyte said...

We're purring that GJ is one of those cats who has a wonderful come back so he can enjoy his twilight months with you. It's so tough to know you are living on borrowed time, but if he's happy, then all you can do is enjoy the blessing. We feel that way about our Au who was at death's door in January and has since recovered - although he's still FIV positive and will be 14 in March next year. Still, every good day is a golden one. We're thinking of you. Our purrs to you all.

We were also wondering about the pills. You mentioned they were no longer available in the UK. Do you have enough? Are they still available elsewhere? If there is anything we can do to help you get more, please don't hesitate to ask us! And Poppy's Sub-Q suggestion also sounds good.

We, too, are cautiously optomistic for GJ as the pills are still working! That is a good sign. But as so many others have said, if you can give SQ fluids at home, it will help GJ just like dialysis in a human kind of. Our Bo got 60cc every day after he was diagnosed, and he was very very ill--BUN ~160 and Creatinine ~ 5 (We don't know if they measure it the same way in the UK as in the US but are curious to GJ's numbers if you could share those). Also, Cornell Veterinary School has a really easy to understand video about Kidney Disease in cats and it will help you understand more if you watch it. Here's the link:
