We witnessed a little magic today...

Hello everyone.. Sorry for the late report but it has been quite a day. Jasper has eaten zilch nothing since coming home on Thursday evening. Barrie has tried everything humanly possible to coax, tempt but not a glimmer. We went to the vet today with a very heavy heart knowing what was ahead. We saw the main man today who listened and shook his head, he sad that Jasper would rapidly go into decline without eating. Then after examining Jasper he said there was something he could try if we were willing, in fact two things. The second one was tablets that are no longer made here but are usually really very good to stimulate appetite, he had just a very few tablets left and if we agreed then they were jasper's. We of course agreed because as the vet said we were at desperation stage now and trying anything. These tablets were safe with Jasper's heart and kidney condition too as many appetite stimulants were not.

The first thing the vet suggested sounded weird but he said could work very quickly, so quickly that a dish of food needed to be ready and waiting. This involved giving Valium intravenously. We again put our faith in him and said lets go for it. Now what happened next was pretty amazing to witness and if we hadn't seen for ourselves we would not have believed it. The nurse prepared some food, the vet shaved jasper's leg and I held him close. The needle went into the vein and the Valium went in. I felt Jasper sag down to the table with legs splayed and head down and both Barrie and I both thought how on earth in this state can our boy eat anything. The vet brought the dish around to Jasper's head and it came up. The vet then started to hand feed Jasper. The magic magic thing was that he ate it up. I carried on while the vet popped out and he ate it all. It was very emotional and we could hardly speak with emotion. We had it explained that the Valium is given IV and it shoots straight to the sensor in the brain for appetite. Wow. It was a one off thing and a last ditch attempt but wow... We start the tablets tonight for the next couple days and pray that Jasper will now eat on his own. We go back on Monday morning and will try every food available to tempt. We found out today that Jasper's kidney's are no good and we know we are on borrowed time but if he eats and with medication we could have More borrowed time to enjoy our beloved boy.. Come on GJ you can do it..

Thank you all so much for your continued support..

Love Carol Barrie and GJ xx

We are torn between smiling and tearing. So glad for this update. We have been worried, as have all your friends. So glad you saw the vet who knew a "secret" to getting GJ to eat. Now if he will just start eating on his own.

I am overjoyed for you all. I know just how important quality time is with anyone you love ~ and even though GJ maybe on borrowed time, I can understand just how much you want to spend time with him. Sending him and you both love and purrs and hopeing he continues to eat. xxxxx

Wow - amazing! We're sending purrs and prayers and love. Keep eating and be well!

Teri and her Stylish Adventure Cats said...

Oh, borrowed time is better than no time and we are hopeful that however long you have together that the love shared will be sweet and tender and while we know because GJ's kidneys are not going to rebound, if he will eat and feel better...each extra day is a gift. Teri says she feels bad that she didn't mention appetite stimulants before, and yes, it is amazing how it works on the brain so fast when given IV. There are tablets, and they take about 15 minutes to work...did your vet send you with any of those to use at home?

Memories of Eric and Flynn said...

That is good news that the valium got Jasper eating. Although the injection was a one off, it has shown that Jasper is able to eat. We are sending our hugest purrs that the tablets will give him an appetite so he will continue eating and his health improve enough for you to all spend quality time together.
Love and (((hugs))) from our mum and dad too.

We so so hope that this will have tempted GJ' brain into keeping on eating- come on GJ buddy boy, you CAN do this.

It truly was a miracle! I cried and laughed when I read your post. Each day you have with your precious boy is a blessing.

Even though he is on borrowed time it doesn't have to mean the end is right away. Please ask the Dr. if daily Sub Q fluid feedings will help. This kept my precious Mr. Sunchine alive for five years after the Dr. told me he was on his last legs and was on borrowed time.

I'm praying for you Ginger Jasper. Take your med's and keep eating.
You are very much loved by so many.

Oh YAY!

Ha, valium has that effect on Jack too. We gave him valium to relax him when he had serious pee problems some years ago. Politest cat in the world about food normally...

In the space a few hours, he had cleaned out the kibble bowl, opened the cupboard, DRAGGED OUT a half full bag of kibble that probably weighed almost as much as him, and ripped it open. When I put that one out of reach on top of the fridge and refilled the kibble bowl, he cleaned out the bowl, opened the cupboard again, dragged out the spare (different) food, and tried to gnaw through the plastic bag. When I put that one out of reach on top of the fridge, he waited just long enough for me to leave the house, jumped up onto the fridge, knocked the first bag down and caused my roommate to come out to find out what the clatter was!

He had NEVER done that before, or since, and almost never jumps up on anything, much less the forbidden counters!

This is such wonderful news! I'm so happy your vet is a good one, and willing to try anything for your precious little guy. I agree that borrowed time is better than no time at all--we had eight months with our Chuckles after he went into renal failure, sub-Q fluids 3x a week kept him happy and full of mischief until he asked to go. You can pack a lot of love into every day, that's for sure.

Through tears I write to you as I think of my dear friend in ill health. I am so glad that you have a vet that is working with you and giving you more time with GJ. When Opus was ill one vet gave up on him and lucky his mommie found a caring vet and we were able to have 2 l/2 more months of quality time. Time that was spent snuggling, spoiling, and loving. You will have this extra time and every minute that you share together is a blessing. My purrs are with you as you go through this hard time.

Angel Simba said...

That is really something about the IV valium. I wonder if valium pills would work to help stimulate appetite too.

We know your time may be limited, but reading here from others who have had cats in similar circumstances, it seems if GJ can be gotten to eat, and maybe have sub Q fluids, things will improve for a while. And we know you are thankful for any amount of time with your boy.

Sending hopeful purrs.

You are constantly in our thoughts and prayers, darling Jasper. And are we ever praying hard! We love you so much! Try your very best to eat. Take some power naps and feel better soon.
We send our love and prayers to your mum and dad. And just remember, we couldn't LOVE YOU more if you were our own. Kisses and hugs.

I've just popped over to your Blog from Mango's.

Five weeks ago I had an awful accident where I ran my lovely cat over. After a week where we couldn't feed her, followed by an operation, my vet used the valium trick, as he calls it. It got Fergus eating within 15 seconds and I know that it's that little bit of food that gave her body the strength to start fighting. I have everything crossed here that it does the same for Jasper. Fergus now has an 'Ovarid' tablet once a week to keep her appetite up. It is a hormone tablet but its side effect is that it's an appetite stimulant.

We are sending you all the good luck and positive vibes that we've had over the last few weeks; we know the roller coaster you are on all too well and will keep you in our thoughts.
